Sports Saturday on Empty Streets: List of The Top 10 Highest Earning Athletes 2009

I got a bit curious as to who amongst all of the world's athletes gets the most of the greens if you know what I mean. And I myself was quite surprised with what I have found. So for all of you curious sports fans out there here is the list according to Forbes

List of World’s Highest Paid Athletes – 2009

#1.
Tiger Woods
$110 million
Age 33

Woods has earned almost $900 million in prize money, endorsements and appearance fees during his 13-year professional golf career and next year is poised to become the first athlete to earn $1 billion during a career.

Woods racked up more than twice the earnings of any other athlete over the past 12 months despite being sidelined for eight months after knee surgery thanks to lucrative endorsement deals with Accenture, Gillette and Nike as well as a thriving golf course design business.

Tiger is the best paid sportsman for eight consecutive years now.

#2 (Tie).
Kobe Bryant
$45 million
Age 30

Bryant secured his place among the NBA’s all-time greats when he won his fourth NBA title with the Los Angeles Lakers in June.

The Black Mamba’s popularity is at its zenith as his No. 24 jersey is the top seller in the U.S., Europe and China.

Bryant pads his $21 million Lakers salary through endorsement deals with Nike, Upper Deck, Activision and VitaminWater.

#2 (Tie).
Michael Jordan
$45 million
Age 46

MJ retired as a player for the third and presumably final time six years ago, but he is still the most famous athlete in the United States.

The Jordan Brand is approaching $1 billion in sales for Nike which turned Jordan into a marketing phenomenon.

Jordan is on the short list of potential buyers for the Charlotte Bobcats where he is head of basketball operations and a minority owner.

#2 (Tie).
Kimi Raikkonen
$45 million
Age 29

Formula One’s highest-paid driver finished a disappointing third in the World Championship standings last year after winning the title in 2007.

This year has been even worse for the Iceman who sits in 10th place in the current standings.

Ferrari resigned Raikkonen in September to a one-year contract extension keeping the Finn behind the wheel for Ferrari through 2010.

#5.
David Beckham
$42 million
Age 34

Beckham is far from the best player on the pitch, but he is still the most famous which is why companies like Adidas, Giorgio Armani and Motorola pay him millions for his endorsement. Beckham spent five months on loan this year playing for AC Milan before his planned return to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy in July when the MLS season is half over.

#6 (Tie).
Lebron James
$40 million
Age 24

The NBA’s MVP led the Cleveland Cavaliers to the league’s best record and had a playoff performance for the ages this year, but his team was bounced from the playoffs by the Orlando Magic in the Conference Finals. His free agency next summer has teams maneuvering to get under the salary cap in hopes of signing King James. The Cavs can offer the biggest contract under NBA salary rules, but James might go in search of a bigger market.

#6 (Tie).
Phil Mickelson
$40 million
Age 39

Playing second fiddle to Tiger Woods has proven very lucrative for the world’s second-ranked player. His most lucrative deal is with Callaway, which signed Mickelson to a five-year extension this year. Other sponsors include Barclay’s, Exxon, KPMG and Rolex. Mickelson has won $54 million in prize money during his career, third all-time behind Woods and Vijay Singh.

#6 (Tie).
Manny Pacquiao
$40 million
Age 30

Pac-Man hogged the boxing spotlight over the past year with victories in two blockbuster fights against Oscar De La Hoya in December and Ricky Hatton in March that combined generated more than $100 million in pay-per-view revenue in the U.S.

A member of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People, Pacquiao plans to run for political office when his days in the ring are over.

#9.
Valentino Rossi
$35 million
Age 30

The Doctor won his eighth World Championship in 2008 after two straight years of falling short of the title.

The biggest star in motorcycle racing earns $16 million annually from his contract to ride for Yamaha and his earnings more than double when you count licensing income, bonuses and endorsement deals with the likes of energy drink Monster.

#10.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
$34 million
Age 49

Earnhardt was chosen as Nascar’s most popular driver for a sixth straight year in 2008 despite winning only one race during the past two seasons. His merchandise sales were twice the total of any other driver. Earnhardt’s biggest personal sponsorship deals are with Adidas, Chevrolet, Polaris, Wrangler and Nationwide Insurance, which he added this year.

Travel Thursday on Empty Streets: Tagaytay City

Whenever I feel like I need a quick weekend or summer getaway and am a bit too lazy or under the budget to go far, the first place that comes to mind is Tagaytay City.

Tagaytay City is located in the Province of Cavite, on the island of Luzon, approximately 56 km (35 mi) south of Manila. It lies within 120° 56' longitude and 14° 6' latitude and overlooks Manila Bay on the North, Taal volcano and Taal lake on the south and Laguna Bay on the east.

The City is linked by the national highway to the Metropolitan Manila Area and to the Province of Batangas. It is also connected by the roads to the adjoining municipalities of Amadeo, Mendez, Indang, Silang and Alfonso in Cavite towards the northwest, to the cities of Calamba and Santa Rosa in Laguna in the northeast and to the town of Talisay in Batangas in the south

Places of interest
Tagaytay Picnic Grove

Tagaytay's playground is the popular Picnic Grove. It features huts line along the gentle slopes of the Tagaytay Ridge. It is a prime location, providing the finest view of the volcano far below. It is in Barangay Sungay East. For the image, please see the infobox at the top.It has Sarangolas{Kites}

People's Park In The Sky

An artful blending of natural and man-made attractions, poised on the highest point of Tagaytay City. It stands on a 4,516 sq, meters solid ground and overlooks four bodies of water – Taal Lake, Balayan Bay, Laguna de Bay and Manila Bay. It is located at Dapdap West and Dapdap East, approximately 6 to 7 km away from Silang Crossing.

Tagaytay Highlands

Tagaytay Highlands is a world-class recreational and residential complex nestled amid the natural splendor and cool, unpolluted atmosphere of the Tagaytay Ridge. With tons of exciting activities, plush facilities, fine dining & drinking, and Asia's most exciting golf course, it serves as a getaway haven from the hustle and bustle of Metro Manila. It is also considered as the country's premier destination for luxury living.

Divine Word Seminary

Divine Word Seminary, one of biggest schools of theology in the Philippines in terms of population and land area, is also one of the oldest religious institutions in the city. It is run by Divine Word Missionaries also known as SVD.

41st Division USAFFE Marker

Tagaytay played a significant role in Philippine history. During World War 2, Filipino revolutionaries found refuge on its vast forests and ridges. It was used as landing site and sanctuary for paratroopers on their way to liberate Manila. The 41st USAFFE marker is a one place where you will know more about Tagaytay’s rich political history. It is located beside the Metro Tagaytay College of Business and Arts, Kaybagal South, Tagaytay City.

11th Airborne Division Marker

On February 3, 1945, the 11th Airbourne Division of Lt. Gen. William Krueger’s 8th Army airdropped military supplies and personnel together with the Philippine Commonwealth troops on the Tagaytay Ridge amidst enemy groundfire. Their mission: to secure Tagaytay City and guarantee the easy flow of troops and supplies to Manila, an action later proved as significant to the Manila Liberation. A marker was made at the Silang Crossing to honor the event.

Filipino-Japanese Friendship Garden

This 1,200 sq. meters garden was constructed to inculcate the value of freedom, peace and international unity into the hearts and minds of the people. It is located in front of Development Academy of the Philippines Conference Center, Sungay East, Tagaytay City.

How to get there:

By plane

The closest major airport is Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Manila).

Driving there:

Driving directions to Tagaytay for those with private cars, vans or taxi
cabs:

Option 1: via SLEX Sta. Rosa Exit, the most popular and easiest, is a straight drive all the way to Tagaytay Public Market (and right smack into Tagaytay Econo Inn) where you turn right going to Tagaytay city proper and Nasugbu/Balayan/Lemery Batangas or left going to People's Park in the Sky. Usual travel time from Makati CBD is 1.5 hours.

Option 2: SLEX Greenfields Exit, an alternate route to Tagaytay that pass by Pramana, Nuvali, Eton City and Paseo de Sta. Rosa, ideal to avoid traffic buildup on Sta. Rosa-Tagaytay National Road on Saturday mornings thus making it the fastest route to Tagaytay on weekends.

Option 3: SLEX Southwoods exit then Governor's Drive in Carmona going to Dasmarinas. Turn left on Maguyam Road just before the Shell Station to your left.

Option 4: Roxas Boulevard, Baclaran, Coastal Road, Bacoor, Imus, Dasmarinas via Aguinaldo Highway. Not recommended due to presence of heavy traffic made worse by SM Dasmarinas and Robinsons Palapala. At the end of Aguinaldo Highway is the Tagaytay Rotonda (roundabout) where a statue of Ninoy Aquino, a BPI with ATM, Days Inn, Max's Restaurant and 7-11 store as landmarks.

Option 5: Another route for the adventurous to Tagaytay is via Daang Hari that passes by Molino, Bacoor, Imus, Dasmarinas and Silang. It bypasses the traffic chokepoint of Bacoor rotonda but not SM Dasma and Robinsons.

Option 6: From Sto. Tomas, Batangas via StarToll in going to Lipa City, take Sambat exit and follow the national road to Talisay then go up Ligaya Drive, the zigzag road to Tagaytay (sometimes called Bitukang Manok, not for the faint of heart and newbie drivers)

Note: If you're a foreigner, you can hire vans to get there or an airport taxi. Some taxi drivers charge a fixed rate or double the meter fare plus toll fees.

By bus

If you're going to Tagaytay via public transportation, request the driver to drop you off at your destination if along the way or at Tagaytay Rotonda (landmarks: Ninoy Aquino monument, BPI, Max's, 7-11) where you can ride jeepneys or tricycle to your target place.

From Manila Airport to Tagaytay City: the cheapest way is to ride the shuttle service from all terminals that pass by MRT Taft Avenue Station and ride BLTB or Crow Transit Buses to Tagaytay. Alternatively, hire a taxi to take you directly to Tagaytay.

From Mandaluyong to Tagaytay: Ride vans (V-Hires) bound for Batangas and Tagaytay in front of Starmall at the corner of EDSA and Shaw Boulevard (walking distance from MRT Shaw Boulevard station). Fare as of posting time is PhP150.00 (this is the best option for those living in Rizal province)

From Laguna to Tagaytay: In Pagsanjan Public Market, there are vans/fx/V-Hires going to Palapala in Dasmarinas Cavite. On reaching Pala-pala transport terminal (near Robinsons Dasmarinas and SM Dasma), transfer to a bus going to Tagaytay where it's less than an hour away.

Calamba to Tagaytay: ride shuttle service at the public market beside Waltermark Calamba or at the Calamba Central Terminal. Cheaper alternative, ride a jeepney going to Balibago complex in Sta. Rosa then transfer to Tagaytay-bound jeepneys.

Balibago to Tagaytay Public Market: Regular jeepneys plying the route to/from Balibago Transport terminal in Sta. Rosa Laguna to Tagaytay Public Market route.

From Alabang: ride the van/fx at the terminal at the corner of SLEX and Alabang-Zapote Road, Filinvest Festival Mall, or still another at Starmall (formerly Metropolis Mall Alabang)

From Cubao, Quezon City: ride buses going to Nasugbu, Lemery or Calatagan at Cubao Bus Terminal in front of Ali Mall.

Shuttle service (vans, FX, V-Hires) in front of EGI Mall (Jollibee) at the corner of Taft Avenue and Sen. Gil Puyat Ave (Buendia) going to Nasugbu, Balayan and Lemery, Batangas that all pass by Tagaytay.

Shuttle service (vans, FX, V-Hires) going to Nasugbu, Balayan and Lemery at Metropoint mall basement at the corner of EDSA and Taft Avenue (accessible from LRT EDSA Station or MRT Taft Avenue station, this is also the so-called EDSA Rotonda though there's really no rotunda there). Current fare is PhP160.00 (regardless of where you're going since it's a derecho trip...information provided by Tutubi's officemate who lives in Balayan, Batangas)

Buses to Tagaytay:

JAM Transit has trips to Tagaytay, Balayan, Batangas, Lemery. Jam Transit terminal is at Taft Avenue corner Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue accessible from LRT Buendia station.

Crow Transit (Crow bus terminal at the corner Taft Ave & EDSA right below MRT Taft Avenue station and walking distance from LRT EDSA station, same terminal as Erjohn & Almark and Genesis behind Sogo Hotel and MacDonalds) has buses to Nasugbu/Calatagan/Balayan in regular schedules.

BLTB (EDSA, Malibay, Pasay City) has buses every 15 minutes to Nasugbu, Balayan or Calatagan Batangas that pass by Tagaytay

Kirby Bus to Tagaytay from Lawton

San Agustin bus with signboard "Mendez-Tagaytay" from Harrison Plaza on Vito Cruz (Pablo Ocampo) or Baclaran via Coastal Road, Aguinaldo Highway to the towns of Bacoor, Imus, Dasmarinas and Silang before reaching Tagaytay. (note this is a slow route due to lots of chokepoints in Cavite)

Saulog Bus Lines with signboard "Mendez-Tagaytay" from Harrison Plaza in Manila or Baclaran via Coastal Road, Aguinaldo Highway to the towns of Bacoor, Imus, Dasmarinas and Silang before reaching Tagaytay (note this is a slow route due to lots of chokepoints in Cavite)

Celyrosa Bus Lines, ordinary buses (i.e. non-airconditioned) in Pasay City (note this is a slow route due to lots of chokepoints in Cavite)

Wellness Wednesday on Empty Streets: Colon Cancer

With the passing of a great Filipino figure Corazon Aquino, whose death was caused by a disease considered as one of the top three causes of death in the Philippines - Colon Cancer - One is left to only ponder as to what could have caused such a thing and more importantly how to avoid it and treat it. As always I did my research and I was able to compile a somewhat easy to understand article for you to read. However, as always when it comes to all types of symptoms and diseases it is always best to consult your personal doctor if you suspect anything wrong with your health.

Here is what I have discovered about Colon Cancer:

Alternative Names
Colorectal cancer; Cancer - colon

Defined

Colon cancer is cancer that starts in the large intestine (colon) or the rectum (end of the colon). Such cancer is sometimes referred to as "colorectal cancer."

Other types of colon cancer such as lymphoma, carcinoid tumors, melanoma, and sarcomas are rare. In this article, use of the term "colon cancer" refers to colon carcinoma and not these rare types of colon cancer.

Causes

According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the United States. (However, early diagnosis often leads to a complete cure.)

There is no single cause for colon cancer. Nearly all colon cancers begin as non-cancerous (benign) polyps, which slowly develop into cancer.

You have a higher risk for colon cancer if you have:

* Cancer elsewhere in the body
* Colorectal polyps
* Crohn's disease
* Family history of colon cancer
* Personal history of breast cancer
* Ulcerative colitis

Certain genetic syndromes also increase the risk of developing colon cancer.

What you eat may play a role in your risk of colon cancer. Colon cancer may be associated with a high-fat, low-fiber diet and red meat. However, some studies found that the risk does not drop if you switch to a high-fiber diet, so the cause of the link is not yet clear.

Smoking cigarettes is another risk factor for colorectal cancer.

Symptoms

Many cases of colon cancer have no symptoms. The following symptoms, however, may indicate colon cancer:

* Abdominal pain and tenderness in the lower abdomen
* Blood in the stool
* Diarrhea, constipation, or other change in bowel habits
* Intestinal obstruction
* Narrow stools
* Unexplained anemia
* Weight loss with no known reason

Exams and Tests

With proper screening, colon cancer can be detected BEFORE symptoms develop, when it is most curable.

Your doctor will perform a physical exam and press on your belly area. The physical exam rarely shows any problems, although the doctor may feel a mass in the abdomen. A rectal exam may reveal a mass in patients with rectal cancer, but not colon cancer.

Imaging tests to diagnose colorectal cancer include:

* Colonoscopy
* Sigmoidoscopy

Note: Only colonoscopy can see the entire colon.

A fecal occult blood test (FOBT) may detect small amounts of blood in the stool, which could suggest colon cancer. However, this test is often negative in patients with colon cancer. For this reason, a FOBT must be done along with colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy. It is also important to note that a positive FOBT doesn't necessarily mean you have cancer.

A complete blood count may show signs of anemia with low iron levels.

If your doctor learns that you do have colorectal cancer, more tests will be done to see if the cancer has spread. This is called staging.
* Stage 0: Very early cancer on the innermost layer of the intestine
* Stage I: Cancer is in the inner layers of the colon
* Stage II: Cancer has spread through the muscle wall of the colon
* Stage III: Cancer has spread to the lymph nodes
* Stage IV: Cancer that has spread to other organs

Treatment

Treatment depends partly on the stage of the cancer. In general, treatments may include:

* Chemotherapy to kill cancer cells
* Surgery to remove cancer cells
* Radiation therapy to destroy cancerous tissue
Stage 0 colon cancer may be treated by removing the cancer cells, often during a colonoscopy. For stages I, II, and III cancer, more extensive surgery is needed to remove the part of the colon that is cancerous.

There is some debate as to whether patients with stage II colon cancer should receive chemotherapy after surgery. You should discuss this with your oncologist.

Almost all patients with stage III colon cancer should receive chemotherapy after surgery for approximately 6 - 8 months. The chemotherapy drug 5-fluorouracil has been shown to increase the chance of a cure in certain patients.

Chemotherapy is also used to treat patients with stage IV colon cancer. Irinotecan, oxaliplatin, and 5-fluorouracil are the three most commonly used drugs. In addition, monoclonal antibodies, including cetuximab (Erbitux), panitumumab (Vectibix), and bevacizumab (Avastin) have been used alone or in combination with chemotherapy.

You may receive just one type, or a combination of the drugs. Capecitabine is a chemotherapy drug taken by mouth, and is similar to 5-fluorouracil.

For patients with stage IV disease that has spread to the liver, various treatments directed specifically at the liver can be used. This may include:

* Burning the cancer (ablation)
* Cutting out the cancer
* Delivering chemotherapy or radiation directly into the liver
* Freezing the cancer (cryotherapy)

Although radiation therapy is occasionally used in patients with colon cancer, it is usually used in combination with chemotherapy for patients with stage III rectal cancer.

If you want to know more here is a video that talks more about Colon Cancer in an in depth way:

I do hope that this helps shed some light for those that are seeking this type of information however as always I pray that no one should be affected by this disease. It is also advisable that if you do have this affliction to try and find support groups within your area to help both you and your family get through this. In the end it is a battle of both the body and mind. Your local hospital should have information about these types of groups.

Music Monday on Empty Streets: Moony

Whenever I feel a bit down or depressed there are just some songs and vocalists that can pick you right up and feel good about yourself. Moony is one of those singers that has that effect on me and apparently continues to do so even till now.

Monica Bragato aka Moony is a musician from Italy known for the many dance tracks coming from her debut album Lifestories. Among the notable singles from the album are "Dove (I'll Be Loving You)", "Acrobats", and "This Is Your Life".

Raised in Venice, Moony was first noticed singing in the Venetian club scene and was asked to provide vocals for a number of songs by DJ and producer Cristiano Spiller. The first single was "Positive", in 1998, sampled from the "Physical", song of Olivia Newton-John, and the second single with Spiller was "Batucada" (1999). She also features in the project Angel Moon in the song "He's All I Want", released in 1998. Her first collaboration was "Point of View" as part of the group DB Boulevard. That song became popular across the European dance music scene and earned DB Boulevard the distinction of being the first Italian music group to be nominated in the MTV Europe Music Awards. From there on, she launched her solo career by producing her debut album Lifestories, which was released in 2003.

In June 2006, Moony released a new single titled "For Your Love".

In July 2008, Moony released a new single titled "I Don't Know Why".

Here is her single Flying away - The music video touched my heart :)
