Ubuntu Mobile OS: A Promising New Smartphone Platform

It has just been revealed today that Canonical, the company that is behind the Linux Based Ubuntu OS has released its version of the OS for Smartphones and it is definitely looking really sweet. Though eventually it will be offering it's systems for TV and PCs as well but for now their main priority is to compete with the front running Smartphone providers such as Google Android, IOS, Windows and Blackberry. The Ubuntu system promises a better UI(User Interface) experience for its users. 

"We expect Ubuntu to be popular in the enterprise market, enabling customers to provision a single secure device for all PC, thin client and phone functions. Ubuntu is already the most widely used Linux enterprise desktop, with customers in a wide range of sectors focused on security, cost and manageability," said Jane Silber, CEO of Canonical. "We also see an opportunity in basic smartphones that are used for the phone, SMS, web and email, where Ubuntu outperforms thanks to its native core apps and stylish presentation."

Ubuntu has gotten the backings of both ARM and x86 processors which makes it an extremely viable contender for today's Android powered smartphones.

The Ubuntu Smartphone OS constitutes similar drivers kernel seen on Android. Canonical's chief Mark Shuttleworth showcased a Galaxy Nexus running the mobile version of Ubuntu featuring a swipe-based Menu. Other known features are voice command, a dedicated app store and personalised welcome screen.

The OS will have both web-based as well as native apps. Ubuntu is considered by many to be the best Linux distro out there, and it does enjoy a lot of developer/ community support. It is the latest in a series of smartphone operating systems from companies and associations not known for their smartphone lineup. This includes Open webOS, FirefoxOS, Jolla's Sailfish OS and Samsung-owned Tizen. 

While it’s a plus to have additional options in the smartphone marketplace, we have to wonder if there is enough room to support another mobile operating system. In the current mobile space, it appears to be a battle for third place between BlackBerry 10, Windows Phone 8 and now Ubuntu.

We have to note that native Ubuntu for smartphones is an entirely different platform and ecosystem than Ubuntu for Android. 

Empty Streets' Software Recommendation: Digeus Registry Cleaner

I love trying out new software, especially those that promises to help our Operating System and speed things up for us. But there has to be a lot of research that needs to be conducted prior to using just anything, most especially if it is readily available for download from the internet. So when I was offered to try out a new registry cleaner I had to do a little research to check it out.

The registry cleaner that was provided to me for testing is called Digeus Registry Cleaner. I did a search on daddy G's seach engine (Google) and tried to look if anyone else has had an opportunity to test this software out. So far the verdict has been quite favorable from those that I have seen and read.

Another thing that I also had to check out was the company's profile and I have discovered that this is a company that was just recently established (2008) and has had a good growing support since then. They have a constant 24/7 customer support line to help anyone out that may encounter any issue with their products. They are multi software oriented and their diversity is note worthy.

With all that being said, let me now start with the review.

Installation from their website was quite easy - and if you dont know how to install the software they even have a complete instructional guide that will help you figure out how. The software file size is also amazingly compact with only less than 2MB to download - making it a breeze to get.

After the installation, all I had left to do was scan the system. Using the system and navigating around it is pretty easy as there aren't any complicated options to choose from.
After the scan was completed I was shocked at what I saw - over a thousand registry errors, most of it came from software that I had previously installed and uninstalled and much more. Personally I use a freeware registry scanner that I thought does a great job but compared to this I realized that there are really limits to using free stuff.
Over all I was satisfied with the results and my system is running a lot faster than it did before. Web browsing was seamless to be honest as I am writing this review. It has delivered what it has promised by fixing these complaints.

With all that being said I would strongly recommend for you to try out this software, you can even try a free scan to examine and test the product to see what it can find in your system. You might get surprised yourself.

It is also important to take note that registry cleaning is only one of the few things you can do to speed things up, try defragging your computer and clearing your internet's cache to help speed things up even more.

Technology Tuesday on Empty Streets: Windows 7 - What to expect

Windows 7 is soon to invade our market and is rumored to be scheduled for release in Oct 2009. To help people out here are some of the things that one can expect from this new version of Microsoft Windows.

So what does this new Windows 7 include and why is it called Windows 7?

• Windows 3.0, 3.1 and 3.11 were the first public versions of Windows, and they used version numbers as part of their official names.
• The following version, Windows 95, was then officially Windows 4.0. Windows 98 and Me were just minor updates of that fourth version (4.10 and 4.90 respectively).
• The next step is Windows 2000 - that is, Windows 5 – followed by Windows XP which was again a minor update (5.1).
• Then there it comes Windows Vista, which obviously corresponds to the sixth version of Windows.
• And finally Windows 7, which was used as a codename for this version but which has finally become the official name for the next Windows version.

As for new features in Windows 7, it’s going to look very similar to Vista. In general, the new Windows 7 File Manager is going to be an evolution of Windows Vista’s shell and will allegedly include a new menu system based on the Office 2008 “ribbon” toolbar.

Gadgets in Windows 7 will also be embedded in the File Explorer. There will be improved and updated versions of Paint and WordPad, an enhanced Start menu and toolbar and also a more complete Control Panel with many new items.

You should always take into account that these are all just rumors that will – or will not - be confirmed as Microsoft works on the new OS. In fact, according to the schedule published on its website, the next PDC 2008 (which will take place at the end of October) will host a special event where Microsoft intends to reveal a more detailed information about the new features in Windows 7.
