I have been using
Viber for quite some time now and I must say am pretty impressed with how it delivers. Viber is a messaging app that was made to be like your usual built in messaging application but this one uses your network connection to get messages through. Only requirement is to basically have your friends and contacts have Viber as well in order for them to receive your calls, text messages and images. What is really cool about Viber is that it is available across all mobile platforms and as long as your unit can make and receive regular calls and text messages you can download and use Viber.
Since it relies literally on internet connection you can connect with practically anyone around the world as long as they have Viber installed in their units of course. I have used it to call my mom at home, my sister at work and my best friend who lives half way around the world in Turkey without getting charged a single cent cause the calls basically goes through the wireless internet connections available. Another cool feature is that it also allows me to see if a particular message or image was received(delivered is the Viber term) when sent. I guess you can think of Viber to be similar to that of VOIP and Skype but on steroids. One thing you should take note though is that this shouldn't be a replacement for your regular phone call apps most especially in times of emergency. Though internally you can use it to make regular text messages and calls and regular rates of course do apply when you go through those options.
Here is the interface of Viber once you have registered and launched the application:
Registration for Viber is quite simple and straight forward. Simply go to your application store, search for Viber. Once you have downloaded Viber, launch the application to start the registration process. It shall be asking for your mobile phone number so it can send a confirmation text message, which in my experience doesn't cost anything, that will send you a 4 digit code which you should input into the confirmation box - though some units like
HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 P3100, Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 and
Samsung Galaxy Note encodes the verification code while you are in the actual application. If you are using an Android unit you can simply swipe the notification bar to view the code easily without having to leave the application. Once verified, it shall access your unit's phonebook to see who's already registered in Viber. In the contacts tab you can see your Viber contacts, all contacts, and favorites. The other tabs show the messages, keypad, recents and more.

In hindsight, I have used Viber on several occasions such as work or communicating with family and friends both abroad and locally. It is cost effective and very easy to use. Best of all it is free to use and download across all platforms such as Android and IOS. Blackberry and Windows are still being developed but user of blackberry units can already use viber for messaging and sending photos, the voice functionality I believe would be following shortly.
Overall, this is a pretty good application to have and is quite easy and straight forward in terms of usage, but remember your unit must already be able to make and receive calls in order for you to be able to use Viber's services. There are some tablets that won't be able to download Viber because of this restriction.
